IP for all the money at FMV
By moving to IP telephony, FMV expects to simplify the administration of its telephony which will also result in lower costs.
FMV today has nearly 40 traditional telephone exchanges scattered throughout Sweden, but in a few years every single one of them will be gone. The Armed Forces have decided that the whole of their carrier network should be ip-based by 2015. This means that the transition from traditional telephony to IP telephony should proceed without the users noticing anything.
FMV has previously engaged Combitech for operational support and since the company also has extensive experience in IP telephony, it was to Combitech that FMV decided to turn for help with the migration.
A bonus with the transition to a fully IP-based system is that it probably help to save money.
“Instead of having the costs of operation and maintenance of nearly 40 exchanges, we need only manage a network which is supposed to be cheaper,” says Peter Martinsson.
Moving from a traditional telecommunications systems to an IP-based one is not without challenges. You have to have sufficient reliability in operation to ensure users are not affected by any interference in telecommunications traffic. You also have to find ways to migrate all existing services, such as faxes, and make them work in the IP network.
Peter Martinsson is confident that any problems will be solved, and one of the reasons for this is the excellent cooperation that exists between FMV and Combitech.
“As in all projects, it is a matter of give and take. We have good personal chemistry and are very pleased with the collaboration,” says Peter Martinsson.
