Validation reduces risk in complex projects
Validation was an important tool when Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, wanted to build a system to create a seamless air traffic management system for Europe.
To avoid unpleasant surprises in the process of developing a logical model of the future ATM (Air Traffic Management) system in Europe, Eurocontrol decided to work with validation. The aim was to really be able to show that the finished product will meet all functionality and quality requirements – when the project was still at the drawing board stage.
“We needed help in developing methods for performing an evaluation of the architecture to ensure that this was indeed the right solution, and Combitech was able to help us with that,” says Hans Wagemans, technical project manager at Eurocontrol.
Given the fact that defects can be detected at a very early stage, you save both time and money by validating a system. It almost goes without saying that if corrections can be made in the document phase, the process will be cheaper, quicker and significantly less laborious than if they have to be made in the implementation phase.
The project also benefited directly from the validation. “The method worked! It was extremely professional. Some parts of the architecture were updated in the light of conclusions reached in the previous validation work,” says Hans Wagemans with satisfaction.
