Technical support for the Swedish flotilla in the Gulf of Aden

While working on technical support for the Swedish flotilla that forms part of the EU operation off the coast of Somalia down in the Gulf of Aden, Combitech also found itself in the middle of a pirate chase. The communications systems were commissioned and fine-tuned on site in Djibouti.

Three Swedish naval vessels were in position in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia. Their job there is to escort and protect the UN food convoys from pirate attack. The pirates capture ships and demand huge ransoms to release their cargos and crews.

The highly charged nature of the situation – one in which the communication systems come into their own – is borne out by the incident at dawn on 26 May 2009, when the Swedish corvette HMS Malmö warded off a pirate attack on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden.
