Production is controlled by computers. For several decades now manufacturing production lines have become more and more automated by means of software. This applies in the paper industry, the steel industry and the chemical process industry.
This software receives data from sensors along the production line. After that the software is able to control the production process by means of actuators that are also built in along the production line. This is where Combitech's experience in terms of integrated real time systems and safety-critical systems has been valuable for the automation industry. In the past production processes were operated and controlled first manually and then later with mechanical or electromechanical devices. Traditionally, software was written as deterministic regulation of procedural code. In the last 10–15 years, non-deterministic software has been used with excellent results in certain cases, where rule-generated feedback improved 100 or 1000-fold.
